Business Appointments 2022

BUSINESS TICKETS – Coming Soon!

Further Your Business Relationships:

We were happy to have members of the publishing industry take business appointments in 2022.

As per the original conference rules, only those registered for the conference are eligible to apply for business appointments. After you have registered for your Core Conference ticket, you will be sent a link where you can request your appointments. As always, first in will get their desired preferences and this will be based on your ticket number, not on completion of the form. This link will not be sent until after early bird ticketing closes on the 28th May. There is a limit of three appointments per member.

Debbie Lee – IngramSpark

Debbie Lee has worked in the publishing industry for over 30 years, first as a sales rep in the general trade market, before becoming a publisher of academic and professional titles. For the last 8 years she has been with Ingram Content Group and is passionate about ensuring that independent authors and small presses have the same access to market through print-on-demand, as mainstream multinationals and larger publishing houses.

What does your business offer? What is it you do? Ingram Content Group provides print-on-demand and global distribution services to publishers all over the world. IngramSpark is the platform specifically designed for indie authors and smaller publishers, while Lightning Source is the platform used by larger publishers – with the same great product range, quality of service and access to market for all.

How might you help an aspiring author? An emerging author? An established author? We work directly with authors who are interested in learning the process right through until they are ready to upload their files for printing, ordering and selling to the retail sector. We can recommend publishing experts if they need assistance during the production stage. Our Client Services Team provides support for any questions that come up with regard to account set up, title set up, ordering process, reportage and so on. In fact, one of our client services reps is an RWA member – we met at conference, a perfect match!

What are the specific benefits you offer to Indie authors? We take away the guess work so you can just print what you need when you need it without over-investing in excess physical stock. Authors can select to print in Australia, the US or UK to reach your readers as quickly and economically as possible. Your titles can also be sold via our global network of 40,000 channel partners (retailers, libraries, specialist stores etc). We receive the order, print the book and pay you for the sale. You can upload your title in paperback, hardback and ebook format as well.

If someone is traditionally published, what opportunities might they have with you? Traditional publishers work with us in any number of ways. They may put your title into their account for sale in other parts of the world, if not locally. They may sell through their initial print-run and convert to print-on-demand when the book becomes a backlist title (so keeping books alive ad infinitum); or they may act in the same conservation-minded manner as indie-authors, and print-to-order at the outset – saving on distribution and warehousing costs and opting for an environmentally sustainable approach to fulfilment.

Is there anything an author should have on hand for their consultation with you? An enquiring mind! I will demonstrate the resources via the IngramSpark website, but they may want to take notes.

What research should they do before their appointment?
Authors will likely be considering their publishing options. They may be at the start of the journey or close to completion of their manuscript. Either way, no prior research is required. This is an opportunity to seek out information that might help with the decision-making process.

Do you have any standout questions or memorable anecdotes from previous business appointments (or even from something you did/asked and would do differently)? I remember speaking with a successful indie author who wrote ‘cosy mysteries’ with a touch of romance. I was embarrassed to admit that I hadn’t heard the term before. It’s since become a favourite genre of mine and top of the reading pile.

What is something you wish people would ask more often? The indie author community is so keen to network, attend conferences, share their knowledge and invest in learning their craft, and I think this level of involvement and commitment to quality has really ‘taken off’ in recent years. Of course, it always helps if authors start thinking about the writing process, the scheduling, budgeting, production and promotion of their book – especially how they are going to reach their market, well in advance of publication.

What opportunities are out there for writers they might not be aware of? I think authors should pitch their ideas to festivals, events, online blogs, or printed mags and share/reflect on the writing experience. There’s nothing like learning from others who have trod the same path. There are so many books to choose from and elevating your author profile just might make the difference to sales.

Do you have any special tips for appointments using ZOOM? Sometimes Zoom renders a conversation even more intimate than in person. There are less distractions which is a boon. It may help to have a mobile number handy in case of technical difficulties but generally, just relax and enjoy the call!

Any other advice to your potential clients? These days it’s not just about the book. Creating an author platform – being proactive and engaged in the promotion of your title and of yourself as a creative and talented individual, can be critical to success.

Kevin Tumlinson – Draft2Digital

The D2D Team shares tips on things like book formatting, marketing, promotion, and branding, using our free tools, so that you spend more time writing than doing any of the above.

What does your business offer? What is it you do? Draft2Digital provides free services to help authors upload, format, layout, and distribute their books to readers worldwide. We help authors get to most major retailers online, and we take only a ~15% cut of royalties, when the author makes a sale. We also have a growing catalog of promotional tools, and are expanding to offer authors resources for getting into all book formats, including ebook, print, and audiobook.

How might you help an aspiring author? An emerging author? An established author? Our tools are built to help any author—from the will-be/aspiring writer to the international bestseller—gain more control over their writing career. We streamline common headaches such as tracking sales and reaching the hundreds of retailers and thousands of libraries scattered around the world. We remove friction for independent authors and self-publishers.

What are the specific benefits you offer to Indie authors? Formatting and layout for both ebook and print; Cover conversion to transform your ebook-only cover into a full-wraparound cover for print; Distribution to major retailers online, worldwide, and to hundreds of smaller retailers you may not even know existed; Distribution to libraries systems worldwide, including public libraries, schools, universities, and businesses; Promotional tools such as Author Pages, Book Tabs, Universal Book Links, Reading Lists, and cultivated retailer promotions; and finally, the very best customer support in the industry—something you can Google and verify in seconds.

If someone is traditionally published, what opportunities might they have with you? All of our promotional tools are available regardless of how your books get to retailers, and they’re all free. Use our Author Pages, Book Tabs, Universal Book Links, and Reading Lists to build your platform online.

Is there anything an author should have on hand for their consultation with you? For author consultations, it helps if you can provide links to your book(s), an author bio, your author website, and other related information. But it isn’t entirely necessary—we’re used to answering questions, so hop in and ask us anything, on just about any topic! If we don’t have a ready answer, we’ll make sure you get one.

What research should they do before their appointment It would likely benefit you a great deal to peruse the website at Draft2Digital.com, especially our blog. You’ll find helpful articles, podcasts, videos, and webinars, all of which can give you a lot of useful information to work with!

Do you have any standout questions or memorable anecdotes from previous business appointments (or even from something you did/asked and would do differently)? The most amusing (and I suppose frustrating?) consultations tend to start with, “Now, tell me what Draft2Digital is, and how much do you charge?” And often, these folks don’t believe us when we say we don’t charge anything, so it can be a conversation pivoting on disbelief and skepticism!

What is something you wish people would ask more often? Ask us why you’d use us to go wide instead of going exclusive to Amazon. We can talk for hours.

What opportunities are out there for writers they might not be aware of? Surprisingly, libraries and subscription services are still largely untapped as opportunities for authors. Some writes even seem to be against one or the other, or both. But these are often the best points of discovery for books—many readers first discover the books and authors they love by reading them for free at a local library. And those readers tend to go on to buy everything they love—even the book they just read!

Do you have any special tips for appointments using ZOOM? The standard tips apply: Use headphones, use the best microphone you can find, have a really good internet connection. If you’re ok with video, make sure you have some light in the room. Make sure you have a quiet place to chat, free of distractions.

Any other advice to your potential clients? Don’t be nervous or hesitant about asking even “basic” questions. We’ve been doing this so long, we sometimes forget that not every writer is starting from the same spot. Even if you’re already a big success, working with a publisher, represented by an agent, there may be ideas about marketing or publishing that you haven’t thought of. And if you’re new to the game, every question is on the table. Ask us anything. We will help.
