Uncle John is a Traditional Custodian of the Gold Coast region, a Kombumerri man, a saltwater man of the Gold Coast part of the wider Yugambeh Language Group. The Yugambeh lands are situated between the Logan River in the north to the Tweed River in the south and bordered by the mountains to the west and the ocean to the east.
Uncle John is a Senior Learning Assistance Officer at Griffith University, based in the GUMURRII unit at the Nathan Campus and a Griffith University Business graduate and Alumni and a long term employee. John is a member of the Griffith University Council of Elders and was a member of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Yugambeh Elders Group.
As a representative of the GC2018 Yugambeh Elders Group, John travelled to Auckland to receive the Queen’s Baton from the Maori people. The Baton was brought back to Queensland to commence the Australian leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay.
Uncle John served on the board at Musgrave Park Cultural Centre for several years. He is a member on several committees at Griffith University. John played both Cricket and Rugby League and has a passion for both sports.
